Vaisala K-Patents Process Refractometers for Sugar Industry

Vaisala K-Patents provides Process Refractometers for accurate in-line Brix and concentration measurements in the cane and beet sugar refining and milling processes. The purpose is to achieve high quality liquid and crystal sugars and to minimise costs of production. Vaisala refractometers are used:

  • to optimise extraction process and to minimize usage of water that needs to be removed from sugar juice later at the evaporator stage.
  • to adapt product flow to the capacity of the evaporators in order to save energy.
  • to make sure that liquid bulk sugar and molasses meet specifications.
  • to control feed juice to adjust the concentration with the capacity of the separation columns. This leads to longer intervals between recovering cycles and longer lifetime of the columns.
  • to monitor supersaturation over complete strike of crystallization.
  • to implement automatic and accurate seeding of the vacuum pan.

Vaisala K-Patents Sanitary Compact Refractometer PR-23-AC

Vaisala K-Patents Sanitary Compact Refractometer PR-23-AC provides accurate means for measuring Brix and liquid concentrations in small pipe line sizes of 2.5 inch and smaller.

The PR-23-AC sensor is installed in the pipe bend. It is angle mounted in the outer corner of the pipe bend directly or through a flow cell and 3A Sanitary clamp or Varivent® connection. This way the best flow conditions and selfcleaning effect can be achieved.

The measurement range covers 0-100 Brix. The accuracy is ± 0.1 Brix and the measurement is automatically temperature compensated. Low and high concentration alarms can be configured. Because of the digital sensing technology, even large amounts of suspended solids, crystals, bubbles or color changes do not affect the measurement or the accuracy.

SeedMaster SM-3 for Multiparameter Sugar Crystallization Monitoring and Automatic Seeding

SeedMaster SM-3 is a unique third generation crystallization transmitter and seeding device to be used with the Vaisala K-Patents Process Refractometer. The SM-3 allows for accurate in-line and real-time monitoring of supersaturation and crystal content over the complete process of crystallization, and implementation and control of automatic or manual seeding. The SM-3 can be connected to one or two Vaisala K-Patents Process Refractometer sensors and to one or two crystallizers.

Supersaturation is the driving force of crystallization. Crystal growth (speed of crystallization) depends on this parameter. High supersaturation means faster crystal growth and vice-versa. Also excessive supersaturation results in poor crystal quality and formation of fines and conglomerates. These need to be melted, concentrated, recycled and crystallized again.

The SeedMaster SM-3 calculates supersaturation on-line taking into account all parameters of the supersaturation function. The SeedMaster SM-3 provides the following tasks:

  1. Electronic data capture on massecuite parameters.
  2. On-line calculation and transmission of massecuite parameters for the advanced control of sugar crystallization with control system.
  3. Organization and storage of strike history data archive.
  4. Advanced communication with the control system.
  5. Automatic seeding of the vacuum pans.
  6. Serves as user interface for the pan and control system operators.

The measured and calculated data, parameters and digital (ON/OFF) data can be transmitted both ways between the SeedMaster SM-3 and a computer or control system. The communication is based on the MODBUS/TCP/IP client/server communication protocol between the devices on the Ethernet TCP/IP network. The SeedMaster SM-3 plays as server, takes requests and data from peripheral devices (e.g. the other measuring devices, i.e. clients) and processes the information and sends its output to the control system using the MODBUS.

The SM-3 can also be equipped with an optional SM-3 l/O unit that handles analog standard current inputs and outputs and ON/OFF digital inputs and outputs in case the process l/O data are not handled by the control system. The data transmission between the SM-3 and SM-3 l/O unit is based on digital communication.
